Community Engaged Research

Community Engaged Research is as an approach that relies upon collaboration and extended engagement with communities, resulting in an action for social change. Using this approach, we bring together academic and community stakeholders to improve population health and reduce health disparities in underserved and marginalized communities. The majority of our projects use qualitative research methods and a novel Community-Based Participatory Research approach called Boot Camp Translation.

Community-Based Participatory Research: Boot Camp Translation

Boot Camp Translation (BCT) is a collaborative process designed to translate evidence-based medical recommendations into locally relevant, culturally appropriate, and engaging messaging. BCT is built on the belief that community members, academic researchers, and medical experts all bring perspectives and skills necessary for a successful partnership. The group develops and distributes targeted health literacy materials for priority health issues.

The BCT process includes:

  1. A day long kick off meeting that covers introductions, BCT overview/purpose, group guidelines and rules, scientific/medical presentation on the health condition or topic, brainstorming about key messages, and wrap up
  2. Monthly in-person or phone meetings where the group sets goals, takes part in extended conversations, expands their thinking and brainstorms new ideas, refines the conceptual framework and language of main messages, views and discusses mock-ups of project materials, and finalizes language and constructs.
  3. A closing meeting to review final product or outcome, bring process to a close, discuss next steps, and celebrate

Qualitative Research

Qualitative Research seeks to gain a rich understanding of the social world. In qualitative research, data is collected through individual interviews, focus groups (group discussions), and observations. This type of research allows us to examine and describe a topic in great depth. We often couple this research with a survey, so we can better understand our participants’ characteristics.

Our studies using qualitative or mixed methods research are: LGBTQ Adolescent HealthHealth Literacy in West LouisvilleHealth Literacy in South Louisville, and Professional Health Care Chaplaincy.
